Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will work on developing new insights into the optimisation of instrument shielding and noise, at the ESS. Of particular importance is the construction of numerical models and the reduction of background noise effects at spallation sources, and the quantification of information that is obtained for a given measurement. This work will involve the application of information theory, particle physics, numerical modelling, and background measurements. Some knowledge of spallation sources and instrumentation would be advantageous. The work will affect not just the instrument shielding, but will influence the design features and standards for the entire facility.

• Experience in measurements of high energy neutron backgrounds at spallation sources
• Experience of using C++, maple or mathematica or similar, mercurial repositories, computing cluster environments and unix-like systems
• Evidence of independently presenting scientific results in the form of papers, presentations, posters etc
• Demonstrated self-sufficiency in pulling together large collaborations from different science fields; and coordinating the team to thoroughly survey the radiation fields at spallation neutron sources.
Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite and experience of working in an international environment is essential.
