Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!
National Supercomputer Centre (NSC) houses large-scale parallel computer systems and advanced computer graphics equipment for visualisation and virtual reality. We hold courses in the use of high-performance computing (HPC) resources, run a help desk and collaborate directly with R&D projects in the HPC field. Our aim is to provide Sweden’s most attractive environment for research in scientific fields that perform large-scale calculations and other e-science activities. Our computers are available to users around the clock, every day of the year.

Your future work assignments
There is ever-growing demand for our services, and our aims are changing constantly. That is why we are looking for someone to help develop, diversify and improve our services. Together with 6 colleagues, you will be a part of the NSC group responsible for large-scale data storage system and networking – the ES-group (External Services). Users of the services are spread all over the world. The group deals with the following areas:
• Software development – NSC takes part in the maintenance of some of the software packages used for storage systems.
• Maintenance – The ES group contains small maintenance groups of 2–3 people who deal with acute problems and take care of systems throughout their entire life cycles.
• New builds – NSC both builds large new data storage system and extends existing ones. The ES group is responsible for adapting software, installation, tests, documentation and launch.
• User support - Not just problem-solving. We also make an effort to make complex things easier to understand for our users, as well as predicting their future problems before they have arisen.
Your future workplace
Welcome to join a team of around 40 technology enthusiasts with a shared ambition of being the best at developing and running high performance computation and data storage services, providing high accessibility, high user-friendliness and first-class user support. Working with us, you will be able to deepen your technological expertise and learn from the industry’s most prominent figures. NSC is an organisation with short decision-making routes, meaning that you can also contribute to shaping our future services. We are developing and many of us have an international background.
Your qualifications
We are looking for someone with a degree in IT/computer science (such as a systems scientist or computer engineer) or equivalent knowledge, as well as experience of system administration in Linux. Because the working language on many of our projects is Swedish, and the majority of user support and documentation is in English, you must be able to work in both of these languages unhindered. Your work also requires you to have programming experience in at least some of the programming languages we use (Python, Perl, Bash, C, C++, Java, Ruby).
The following are desirable: MSc in Computer Technology/Computer Science or equivalent; experience of system administration of large-scale environments (compute cluster or cloud services); version control and configuration management, preferably with Git and Puppet; virtualisation (Ganeti); experience of maintaining large computer networks (Junos, VLAN, link aggregation, firewalls); experience of project management.
In order to work well in the ES group, you must be independent, responsible and thorough. You must work in a structured way, be dedicated and social, and have a good ability to work with others, as well as be able to understand users’ needs.
