Arbetsbeskrivning
Do you wish to put your skills to use for a good cause, or do you simply enjoy working with topics related to science and medicine? Join our dynamic, friendly communications team in our work to support a global patient safety mission.
Uppsala Monitoring Centre, the WHO Collaborating Centre for International Drug Monitoring, is an independent, non-profit foundation and an international centre for medicine safety and scientific research.
UMC’s Global Communications department works to raise awareness of medicine safety, establish UMC’s role as a global scientific leader and a trusted partner, and improve communications practices for better patient safety. The department has a dual role within the organisation, where we on one hand drive UMC’s communications strategy and products, and on the other hand act as an in-house content bureau to provide support to other departments upon request.
The department is seeking a social media producer to strengthen the team, which currently consists of six colleagues reporting to the Head of Communications. While each team member has their own responsibilities, we work together a lot and lend a helping hand when needed, so you will have the opportunity to try your hand at different communications projects and develop new skills. The team dynamic is driven by a spirit of collaboration, generosity, professionalism, and creative curiosity. The team members are of mixed nationalities and our working language is English.
Your main responsibilities will be to produce content for and manage UMC’s social media channels. You will be in charge of creating social media posts for newly published articles or videos, products, and upcoming events, and you’ll also work independently to identify interesting topics in the organisation and in the scientific field to share on social media. You’ll work with other members of the communications team to create supporting material for new initiatives or mini campaigns to raise awareness of topics that you have identified. You will create strategic plans for the growth of our channels, as well as provide input on how other projects can best be showcased on social media.
The position requires you to think creatively and approach the organisation with curiosity and a drive to learn about the science of medicine safety. You’ll need to be collaborative and attentive to details. Because UMC works with monitoring of side effects to medicines and this topic can raise concern among the public, it’s of outmost importance that our new social media producer can exercise good judgment about what’s appropriate to share on social media and how different messages may be perceived by different audiences.
While social media lies at the core of this position, you will spend up to a quarter of your time on other communications activities. Depending on your skills, this might include editorial work, campaign coordination, content production for other channels or formats, and giving lectures or workshops on relevant topics.
For this position, we will consider seasoned communications professionals as well as early career starters, or scientists looking to make a career change into science communication. The level of responsibility as well as the paygrade will be determined by the experience of the candidate. If a candidate lacks relevant professional experience, we will look for a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of using social media and online platforms.
To succeed in this role, you need:
An academic degree in a relevant communications or scientific field, or a few years’ professional experience of social media or editorial work.
Fluency and flair in written English.
Demonstrated knowledge of the main social media platforms.
The capacity to quickly acquire a basic understanding of our scientific field.
The ability to deliver social media content on a daily basis, to a set deadline.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective collaborations within the organisation.
The ability to thrive in a collaborative environment where the team works towards common goals.
The ability to self-organise and keep yourself on track even in a remote-work setting, as most of UMC’s staff are working from home during the pandemic.
It’s an advantage if you also have:
Fluency in Swedish.
Experience of using Hootsuite or similar social media management tools.
Broader communications skills that enable you to work on projects other than social media production.
Academic or professional experience from a scientific field, or from humanitarian, non-profit, or international organisations.
International or inter-cultural experience that gives you a broader understanding of global audiences.
