MAX IV is looking for a Research Engineer who will…
be involved in the software developments of the data acquisition and the experiment control framework from a variety of detectors and their integration into the experimental stations. As an experienced professional you will bridge science and state of the art software development. You can thus understand the scientific background of our software developments and support the rest of the team with that knowledge. You also know or can learn about the science of the experiments running in MAX IV. If you have a background in scientific facilities, it would be a plus, either as working in one or as a regular former user. The more we understand the usage of our developments, the more successful our users will be.
You will be expected to participate in different international collaborations about control and data acquisition, as well as to contribute to international conferences.
You will also be able to learn and to increase your skills, competence, and experience.
Your main work tasks will be
- Developing software projects for scientific experimentation at MAX IV.
- Supporting the MAX IV staff in using the data acquisition and the experiment control framework
- Bridging the science case and the software requirements
- Improving the “User eXperience” for troubleshooting and finding simple user-friendly solutions to complex problems.
- Participating to the team planning and resource estimation as well as improving the group infrastructure.
To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications
- A university degree in Physics.
- A professional experience with Python 3 and C++ programming.
- An experience of Software development for scientific environment.
- A Scientific domain knowledge about a related discipline (e.g. spectroscopy, microscopy, particle accelerators...).
- An understanding of common Software Architecture: Functional, OOP, Reactive …
- The ability to work in a Linux operating system environment.
- An open source spirit.
Below are seen as merits
- PhD in a scientific domain relevant in an X-ray synchrotron facility
- Scientific publications (journals and/or conferences)
- Experience in Data Collection and Control System development.
- Experience in Tango and/or Sardana development.
- Experience with Agile team environment and familiar with peer programming, review, unit tests, continuous integration, and continuous delivery.
- An understanding of Performance and Distribution of systems: TCP/IP, ZMQ, …
- Other Software programming languages: JavaScript, C, C++, Go, Rust …
- Working in an international research-oriented environment or being a former user of such facilities.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.
The MAX IV Controls and IT team (KITS) deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment and requires close collaboration with the staff in order to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 50 people in total who work in 5 domains in a well organised and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.
