Information about the research
The Department of Space, Earth and Environment contains five divisions, with research and education spanning from global challenges related to sustainability and energy supply to astronomy and space sciences. The department is host to two major infrastructures, Onsala Space Observatory and Chalmers Power Central, and consist of about 250 employees.
The division of Physical Resource Theory carries out research and education on potential solutions to our major environmental challenges, e.g. global warming and sustainable use of land and other resources. At our division we focus on research in the field of technical and socio-economic systems addressing the challenges involved in the transition into a sustainable and low carbon society for a growing population, where a range of different quantitative and qualitative methods can be applied on our research topics. The ambition is to build challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional boundaries and increase the level of multi-disciplinarity in research. The division has around 50 staff members, faculty and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers, natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.
Major responsibilities
The transport system is currently undergoing several changes that will play a critical role for the sectors pathway towards zero CO2 emissions. (1) Electrified vehicles are increasing its share of new sales, (2) car/ride sharing is on the rise, and (3) connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are coming. Such changes will have profound implications of life cycle CO2 emissions and resource use within the transport sector.
Within the research program Mistra Carbon Exit, we analyze the conditions, opportunities and risks of switching the Swedish transport system to net zero emissions of carbon dioxide by 2045. One of the goals of the research program is to monitor the effects of new transport solutions through the supply chains of future transport services, from material production and manufacture of vehicles to how the transport service is offered. The work is therefore interdisciplinary and despite the focus on the Swedish transition, many of the consequences are international. The research is multifaceted and expertise in modelling both energy and production systems, statistical analysis and interpretation of political decisions and international agreements is required to capture the various aspects of the relevant supply chains in a climate and resource context.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is for two years.
Qualifications
The candidate is expected to work independently, show maturity in the work and be interested in having a significant amount of interaction with the research programme's stakeholders, including actors in the automotive industry and in government agencies. Project management experience is highly valued.
To qualify for the position you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field as well as relevant post doc experience. Particularly relevant is research experience in material flow analysis, energy system research, transport system research, computational modeling and/or statistical analysis. In addition, experience and knowledge about relevant policy process at the Swedish, EU and global level is meritorious. Documented scientific skills, including demonstrated ability in independent research, publishing in top journals, and presenting in international conferences are meritorious. Finally, excellent skills in English as well as Swedish will be necessary to meet the project demands.
