Strategic Portfolio Analytics in Vattenfall Group Risk Management
About Risk Management
In Vattenfall, the CFO staff function Risk Management has the overarching responsibility and is accountable for the risk management framework within Vattenfall as second-line-of defense. This includes securing risk governance in Vattenfall, the coordination and safeguarding of risk control and providing transparency of Vattenfall’s risk positions, as well as decision making support for the business and top management.
Corporate Risk Management within Risk Management is tasked with holistic risk management duties on the enterprise level. Amongst others, top management is provided with independent advice on the risk-reward balance of investments/divestments, and strategic risk analyses to support the portfolio steering.
The function Strategic Risk as part of Corporate Risk Management, is responsible for identifying and assessing fundamental and long-term wholesale price risks and their impact on the energy market and Vattenfall’s asset portfolio. This work comprises ad-hoc strategic analyses, calculation of the fair value of the Group Asset Portfolio, reporting of the long-term risk exposure of Vattenfall, independent review of Vattenfall’s proprietary Long-Term Market Outlook, as well as examinations of the asset valuation methods and dispatch models that are used for investment/divestment decisions.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities
As a Quantitative Analyst in the Strategic Risk team, you will mostly be working on the model development and analysis of the inhouse-built valuation model for the entire production asset portfolio of Vattenfall. This is used both for the valuation of the Group asset portfolio as well as for ad-hoc requests by senior management to support strategic decision-making. Moreover, you will be responsible for validating the complex valuation models of investment projects. Finally, you will be contributing to the independent review duties with respect to the Long-Term Market Outlook (for e.g. power, gas, coal, CO2, etc) that is input to investment valuations and the Group’s strategic positioning.
Tasks and responsibilities also include:
Continuous development and validation of Risk’s in-house built portfolio model for all relevant technologies, e.g. Wind, Solar, Batteries, Pump Storage, Swedish Hydro, Nuclear, Condensing plants, District Heating Clusters
Review of quantitative models/methods used for investment/divestment valuations. Close collaboration within Risk (Transaction Analysis) and business is required
Contribute to the independent review duties with respect to the official Long-Term Market Outlook of Vattenfall
Report the fair value (intrinsic- and option value) of the Group asset portfolio
Carry out ad-hoc strategic/portfolio risk analyses for senior management
Evaluate and report the long-term Group exposure
Build a strong network of contacts throughout the organisation.
Qualifications
Academic degree with quantitative focus, e.g. in physics, mathematics, econometrics, or equivalent qualifications and experience. A combined degree with both quantitative and financial modules is an advantage
Proficient with Python. Proficiency with other modelling languages is an advantage
Knowledge of- or keen interest in the Continental and Nordic power market, global energy economics, fundamental and power plant dispatch modelling
Willing to travel occasionally (mostly to Amsterdam and Berlin)
Strong command of English, both verbally and written; Swedish, Dutch or German language skills are an advantage
0-2 years of relevant work experience.
