Superconducting RF Engineer

Arbetsbeskrivning

The European Spallation Source is hiring motivated and inspiring people from across the globe to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek ambitious, talented people in a range of fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe. The ESS is a partnership of 13 European countries and occupies a truly impressive campus based in the beautiful, cosmopolitan university city of Lund, Sweden – just 10 minutes from Malmö and 30 minutes from Copenhagen.

We are now looking to appoint a Superconducting Radio Frequency Engineer. This is a mission critical role that exists within the Superconducting RF Section of the Linac group. Within this role, you will deal with a broad range of challenging problems involving cryomodules, SRF cavities and related structures – such as power couplers, tuners, etc. We are therefore looking for an SRF Engineer to work on the integration, testing, installation and commissioning of the superconducting Linac (SCL) components.

About the role:
As the successful candidate and future SRF Engineer, you will:

• Assist in the preparation, execution and evaluation of the RF activities for the Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) of the ESS cryomodules, both at ESS and at Uppsala.
• Have responsibility for the development and execution of the high level-applications for the cryomodule measurements at test stands and for the technical commissioning of the SCL.
• Serve as the main architect and developer of the needed applications to fulfill the testing and commissioning scope.
• Take a lead role in the laboratory of the SRF Section for the development and deployment of instrumentation setups and procedures to support the execution and supervision of the SAT test program and – later on – the operation of the hardware in tunnel.
• Participate with the SRF Section to execute the test program at TS2 and FREIA, and with the SCL technical commissioning and operation.

About you:

As a recognised expert in your professional discipline, you are someone who can bring:

• A PhD in physics or engineering, with a thesis or postdoctoral work related to the physics and technology of SRF radiofrequency accelerators.
• Expert mastery of RF instrumentation – such as vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power meters and oscilloscopes.
• Strong prior experience with python, git and open-source scientific programming for the development of high-level measurement/analysis applications in a multi-platform environment.
• Relevant prior experience with control systems, in particular the EPICS environment for the deployment of IOC's and OPI's.
• A basic understanding of signal conditioning and data acquisition systems.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills, a sense of humour and the ability to build strong and effective networks of contacts both inside and outside of the organisation.
• Excellent skills in both written and oral English. The ability to speak or learn Swedish would be a definite advantage – but is not a requirement.

What can we offer?

Aside from the opportunity to work at one of only 4 linear accelerator-based spallation sources on the whole planet, you can also expect:

• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
• A challenging, exciting and high-paced work environment.
• Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities, and achievements.
• Benefits including 30 days of annual leave as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Flexible working arrangements and a real work-life balance.
• Relocation support and allowances if needed.
• An excellent quality of life in the highly sought after, family-friendly, beautiful and well-connected Southern Sweden/Greater Copenhagen region.
