The European Spallation Source (ESS) will be a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world's most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials - from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 16 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. Description of department/group The SCC group will work alongside the other groups in the Accelerator Division, at first to help set up and exploit the scientific computing environment that will be a vital and central part of the accelerator design process. The SCC group will also attend to the early needs of the control system, an area that will grow in scope as component fabrication and accelerator installation proceed towards beam commissioning. Description of main responsibilities Beam physics, control system development, and technical information sytems relevant to accelerator design. Qualifications Essential: . One to 5 years of experience in an accelerator environment after receiving a PhD in Accelerator Physics, or a closely related subject. . Strong knowledge of Accelerator Science, including control room experience.[ . Extensive experience with linux, C++ and/or Java, and scripting languages.[ . Experience and success in a team working environment.[ . Excellent oral and written English skills. Desirable: . Experience with relational database management systems, and with standard accelerator design and simulations codes, such as MAD, TraceWin, et cetera. .
