System developer for scientific tools

Do you like to be involved in developing tomorrow's climate knowledge and developing a qualified basis for decisions in society and business? To meet society's expectations for information about future climates, Rossby Centre is now supplementing its staff with a system developer. We offer a stimulating environment with external contacts and flexible forms of work.

Rossby Centre is SMHI's climate modelling unit. The centre conducts research on future climates and the underlying climate processes. Climate models take into account more and more physical processes of the climate system. The growing complexity leads to an increasingly resource-intensive calculations. Results improve the understanding of the climate and lead to climate services for society's sectors. SMHI participates in several international projects with research on, and with the use of, high-resolution regional climate models which have an improved ability to represent processes associated with rain and cloud formation. It is a research area with great potential and with a strong focus on extreme climate and weather events.

We are now looking for a driven developer of scientific tools with good knowledge of and experience in complex computational systems for high-performance computers with thousands of computing cores. Together with other employees at Rossby Centre, you will produce the next generation of regional climate calculations.

Central tasks are programming technical aspects of SMHI's regional climate model and its use. This includes e.g. updates and further development of the model code, performing of climate simulations, post-processing of output and technical design for multiple model runs. It also means assisting with support for other users and developers as well as participating in the development of analysis tools. Your growing knowledge of the model system's structure and technology will be a support for other employees. 

Your profile

We are looking for you with a degree from a university or college in computer science, programming, or meteorology, climatology, oceanography, physics, mathematics or related fields with a clear focus on computational systems and large data volumes. 

Experience of working with practical programming tasks in complex computational systems on high-performance computer systems in a Linux environment and code development in a team is a requirement. Knowledge of some of the programming languages or tools Python, Fortran, Shellscript, C, as well as the collaboration tools Github or Gitlab is a requirement. Knowledge in several of these is an advantage. Experience from working with issues concerning the climate or a nearby area and experience of contributing to applications in the fields of technical development is an advantage.

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as communication and analytical skills and the ability to plan and drive the work forward. Your ability to deepen your expertise in complex computational systems is also of great importance. We also expect you to be used to work with deadlines. You have good knowledge of English in speech and writing. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage, If knowledge of Swedish is lacking we expect a distinct will to learn Swedish.

Work permit for Sweden is required (which applies to EU citizens). The employment is permanent (”tillsvidare”) and is based in Norrköping.
