VACANCY
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, and founded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific instruments. Every year, the Institute hosts over 2000 visits by scientists, who come to carry out world-class research in condensed matter physics, crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. The Projects and Techniques Division, which is responsible for the development of the ILL's instruments and for technical support, currently has a vacancy in its IT Service for a:
Systems and Network Administrator
Duties:
As an active member of the ILL's "Network and Data Services" group, your duties will involve support, maintenance and development activities in the following areas:
-The network (several hundred network devices, 150 Wi-Fi access points),
-The services maintained by the group (nfs, samba, dhcp, dns, firewall, email, LDAP directory, VPN, Radius, HPC, openstack, backup),
-The storage systems (~1PB).
The main systems used are based on the following: Extreme Network for the network, Debian GNU/Linux for the operating system, and GPFS, ZFS and CEPH for storage.
You will be expected to play a part in one or more of the strategic projects currently under way:
-Overhaul of network architecture throughout the site,
-Centralisation and automation of network device configuration,
-Centralisation and automation of server configuration,
-Replacement of primary storage infrastructure for user data.
Qualifications and experience:
-QCF Level 5 qualification (HND or equivalent), Level 6 qualification (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) or Level 7 qualification (Master's degree or equivalent) in computing or computer science,
-Knowledge of network technologies: IP, Ethernet, VLAN, firewall,
-Knowledge of the main system software used would be appreciated: nginx, postfix, dovecot, sympa, nfs, samba, bind, haproxy, freeradius,
-Knowledge of one or more file systems would be an asset,
-You are a recognised team player.
Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
Notes:
18-month fixed-term contract.
Medical fitness for work under ionising radiation is required.
Post based in GRENOBLE, France, and subject to administrative screening.
