We are now looking for a new Medicinal Chemistry team leader to lead our expanding New Modalities chemistry team working on peptides, drug conjugates and optimization of small molecule ligands for targeted drug delivery. We offer an exciting opportunity for a strong medicinal chemist with great leadership skills and experience in drug discovery and medicinal chemistry, from design and synthesis of new candidate drugs.
As part of an creative and dedicated team, you will contribute with your high ambitions, collaborative mindset and enthusiasm to push the boundaries of science in the area of medicinal and synthetic chemistry. You will influence the direction of strategy and take a responsible role of the operational aspects within the department. The positions are placed at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) is one of AstraZeneca´s core therapy areas. We follow the science and turn ideas into life changing medicines for patients suffering from Heart Failure, Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease. We drive our pipeline and areas of scientific leadership internally and in collaborations with world experts which provides you as a scientist with the unique opportunity to stay at the fore-front of science.
The CVRM Medicinal Chemistry Department is a critical player in the discovery and design of drug molecules to identify and validate novel biological targets. To realize our ambitions, we stay agnostic to molecular modality and you will be able to lead a team and work with experts around you in small molecules, peptides, RNA and drug conjugates.
What you'll do
In this role you will lead a team of creative, openminded and experienced Medicinal Chemists in the area of New Modalities Chemistry. As team leader you will be accountable for your team's delivery and personal development of your team members. You will also lead Medicinal Chemistry in projects across various phases in discovery and contribute to the scientific direction of research programs across the portfolio.
As a representative of the department leadership you are expected to be up to date with the latest scientific development in your area of expertise and contribute to the strategic direction. You will ensure an openness and curiosity to quickly adopt to new opportunities.
As both an opportunity and expectation, you will build on your scientific reputation and represent the department through publications, presentations and leveraging your collaborative networks.
Essential for the role
This role requires a Ph. D. degree in a relevant scientific discipline of Synthetic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry with 5+ years post-doctoral research experience in drug discovery, preferentially from an industrial setting. Prior experience and proven ability to lead and deliver medicinal chemistry programs of discovery projects is a must. Experience from New Modalities chemistry such as peptides, RNA or drug conjugates is strongly preferred.
You are internationally recognized within the field of Medicinal Chemistry applied to drug discovery through your publication record, conference disclosures and external network.
With your excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills you will have the ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in drug discovery. Key qualities:
* Track record of leadership with strong social and interpersonal skills and an ability to develop high performing teams with various cultural and diversity aspects.
* A demonstrated record of leading through others, people development and performance management.
* Experience and a good understanding of when to use various chemical modalities in drug discovery, various hit finding strategies, multi-parameter optimization, synthetic route development and IP strategies
* A genuine openness to novel scientific approaches and eagerness to drive projects with the most relevant drug modalities
* Strong influencing skills and a developed strategic thinking which can be exemplified
* Sound knowledge of related disciplines including DMPK, safety, bioscience, pharmaceutical development and early clinical development
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present to senior leaders. Excellent English.
