A post for a technical civil engineer is open in the Site and Civil Engineering (SCE) Department, for coordinating the existing underground civil engineering assets at CERN and design studies for new scientific infrastructure.
Functions
As Technical Civil Engineer, for Tunnel Asset Management (TAM) you will :
- Plan regular inspections of CERN's 70km underground network of tunnels, shafts, and caverns.
- Prepare monitoring and maintenance plans for the underground civil engineering infrastructures.
- Where deemed appropriate, ensure the installation of structural health monitoring equipment (e.g. crack meters, extensometers, fibre optic sensors, etc.).
- Carry out inspections, analyse findings and document them in appropriate databases (e.g. ArcGIS).
- In collaboration with other teams inside CERN and outside institutes/companies, you will contribute to the R&D in new monitoring technologies such as photogrammetry, fibre optic sensors and use of remote vehicles for inspections.
For the future design studies you will :
- Gather requirements from the end-users and translate them in Technical Specifications.
- Produce and/or check conceptual plans and layout drawings for the proposed new facilities.
- Prepare cost estimates and timelines for the construction of future projects and studies.
- Ensure that all design concepts comply with the relevant local legislation/norms and regulations.
- Oversee financial variations, claims, agreements and settlements with consultants and contractors.
- Write technical documents and reports, as well as tender and contracts for the design phase of new facilities.
- Plan and coordinate the design work of the external design consultants including the procurement process and the setup and management of design consultancy contracts.
- For small to medium size projects, you will plan and coordinate the execution of the works including the procurement process and the setup and management of construction contracts.
- Oversee the works on-site, check bill of quantity measurements; ensure that all construction work are carried out safely and that they comply with the contractual drawings and documents.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of civil engineering or a related field.
Experience:
The experience required for this post is:
- Extensive experience in structural health monitoring of civil engineering structures.
- Experience in the domain of civil design and construction of underground and surface buildings.
- Proven experience of coordinating different professions (architect, structural engineers, HVAC engineers, electrical engineers, technical/legal/financial advisors, contractors, etc.).
- Experience in procurement processes (definition of procurement strategy, selection of firms, call for tenders, etc.).
The following will be considered an asset:
- Experience in the industrial and/or scientific environment in the field of civil engineering.
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge of underground structure construction.
- Knowledge of building construction, consolidation and renovation.
- Building diagnostics.
- Project management.

Language skills:
Spoken and written English or French. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.

Employment Conditions
Contract type:
Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

- Work in Radiation Areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving licence is required.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
