Supports the team and helps the designers with practical implementation and follows through on the Technical Design Direction and the Creative Direction. Helps the wider design team with technical solutions in the engine, workflows and tools.
Responsibilities
Must speak up and communicate any concerns regarding a potential mismatch between goals and practical reality. Eg. Can this be done? How hard is it?
Implement and/or design systems, solutions or workflows that can be used by other designers
Set best practices and guidelines for content implementation on the project. For the designers to craft with efficiency, and being mindful of performance constraints.
Review and evaluate performance and memory budgets across the board
Provide technical feedback to the designers
Introduce new designers to the engine
Typical Tasks
Identify problems and find solutions
Support and guide other team members, first point of escalation for designers
Research and develop workflows, best practices by investigating undocumented systems and setting up documentation / example data
Maintain systems or solutions during production
Review design, content and the game to ensure consistency, quality and compliance with performance goals, memory budgets and standards
Review bugs to stay on top of any issues
Could be responsible for a specific area, UI, game modes, AI
Often implement scripting or game design work when needed during parts of production
Requirements
Has a strong understanding of design processes, content creation, engines, tools and pipelines
Working towards a mastery of FrostEd. Knows how everything works and won’t shy away from deep diving into new or undocumented systems
Has some understanding of code and proven skills in scripting-languages
Answers to the Technical Design Director or Lead Technical Designer as the day-to-day manager
Has experience in cross disciplinary collaboration and bridging between creatives and engineers
