The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a mechanical technician. Are you an enthusiastic technically-minded person and ready for a big challenge? Take part, you are needed!

Description of directorate/division
The Detector group is part of the Neutron Technology Division under the Science Directorate. The Neutron Technology Division provides the technological tools required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. The Detector group is currently focused on performing the necessary research and development for alternatives to He-3 detectors for neutron detection.

Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be a technician in detector group’s new state-of-the-art workshop located in Lund. This mechanical workshop is currently being established to support a wide range of very specialized activities, including the prototyping of mechanical parts for neutron detectors. You will be responsible for helping to build-up the workshop; take part in the first items produced there, setting up procedures, day-to-day running of the workshop, and production for both prototyping and full construction. You will also be involved in the procurement of parts and materials across Europe. This is a unique opportunity for the right candidate to gain a very wide range of experience in world leading technologies.

Qualifications
We are looking for a self-motivated, creative person who enjoys developing novel solutions and tackling difficult challenges. To be successful in this position you must be a perfectionist who will not accept second best. You must be flexible in your approach to work, prepared to tackle a very wide range of tasks in order to ensure successful operation of the workshop and delivery to the scientists you will be supporting. You must be a hands-on person, strongly motivated by the desire to deliver on time, in spec.

You must have general high standard of technical skills and excellent mechanical dexterity. Experience of precision machining would be a considerable advantage. Furthermore, you will be a technically-minded person looking to gain specialist experience in a highly technical hands-on career path.

We expect that you will have a few years work experience in precision engineering. Experience in a research environment would be an advantage but is not essential. We value academic training, but we will also consider candidates with a limited academic background who have especially relevant work experience.

Your English skills are good both verbal and written and you have a basic knowledge of Swedish or Danish. 

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
