ESS is now looking for a Technician for Neutron Choppers for the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Division, organised within the Technical Directorate.

Job description

The successful candidate will be an experienced technician participating in the outsourcing, building, integration, installation and maintenance of chopper prototypes and production level choppers for instruments to be deployed at the ESS. The candidate will be immediately introduced in the assembly and testing of the first chopper system as part of the Common Chopper Project. The candidate will also offer technical support to mechanical and control engineers, and will work closely with other technicians. The candidate will be responsible for the day to day running of one of the chopper workshops. 

You will have varied, wide ranging responsibilities and duties that will include: 


• Offering expert technical advice to mechanical engineers in relation to productions methods, best practice and as required.
• Handling workshop equipment, tools, including small soldering. 
• Small and large component assembly and handling (including components >100kg).
• Maintenance, assembly, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and testing of electrical and mechanical systems.
• Execute equipment test programs.
• Involvement in the procurement of parts.
• Keeping stock control and inventory.
• Involvement in the R+D, testing and quality assurance process, as required.
• Maintaining the chopper facilities ready for use.
• Ensuring the safety of these working spaces.
• Other workshop related tasks, including administrative aspects and documentation.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a technician with practical experience in technical workshops and, ideally, building demonstrators, handling and maintaining medical equipment or similar complex devices. In particular, the successful candidate should have the following experience:


• A certified professional education in the field of Mechanical or Mechatronic Technology (mechanical technician, Industrial technician or similar certified professions) would be an advantage.
• 10+ years of experience in an engineering or other highly technical environment is a prerequisite.
• Proven mechanical dexterity, able to manipulate precision jobs and to assemble complex parts. 
• Practical experience with workshop equipment, including clean areas, cutting, and precision equipment, soldering, etc.
• Basic numeracy as required performing loading/cutting calculations.
• Wide-ranging experience of mechanical or electronic processes and practices is desirable.
• Knowledge of dynamic balancing techniques would be an advantage
• Understanding of vacuum systems would be an advantage.
• A good safety record, ideally with formal safety training applicable to workshop activities.
• Experience of working in an international research environment would be an advantage.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of Swedish would be a strong advantage.

• Able to multi-task and to work to deadlines.
• Able to adapt to new challenges and to develop novel solutions. 
• Able to work unsupervised as part of a team project.
• Knowledge of safety policies to keep safe work spaces and ensuring that the users follow the safety regulations. 
• Willingness to expand theoretical as well as practical technical knowledge and aspects relevant to the scope of the choppers work package.

A suitable candidate for the position would be a reliable team player, good listener, effective and honest communicator. As a person you must be flexible in your approach to work and be prepared to tackle a very wide range of tasks in order to ensure successful and timely delivery. You must be a hands-on person, strongly motivated by the desire to deliver on time and determined to ensure the successful manufacturing, testing and installation of production level choppers.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. 

Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. 

Start date
The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
