The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Technician for the Protection and Safety Systems Group at ESS.
Description of directorate/division
You will join the Integrated Control System Division, which is designing, constructing, commissioning and operating the control systems for the ESS facility. The Integrated Control System monitors and controls most of the operational aspects. We cover a wide range of sensing, control and automation technology from highly customized electronics specific for ESS applications to standardized PLCs controlling building automation.
Description of main responsibilities
• Provides technical support for the design, procurement, assembly, installation, integration, commissioning, operation, and troubleshooting of ESS mission critical systems
• Develops and maintains documentation and procedures for assembling, installing, troubleshooting, operating, and maintaining mission critical systems equipment
• Participates in troubleshooting, problem solving, and workflow planning for system development, integration and operation
• Implements custom assemblies by designing (component layout, parts selection, mechanical design, etc.), fabricating (interfacing with fabricator and/or directly performing fabrication tasks), inspecting, and testing
• Plans, equips and operates protection systems laboratory areas
• Procures equipment and components for machine protection systems
• Assists engineers to modify as built drawings and circuit diagrams
Personal profile:
• Ability to work effectively in and with team(s)
• Proven written and oral communication skills
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage
• Experience of working in an international environment
• Uses initiative to identify and resolve problems/issues
Qualifications
• Good knowledge of EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) and methodologies to mitigate or protect from electrical noise
• Able to create electrical drawings using tools like E-Plan or Visio
• Good knowledge of automation equipment hardware (PLC based systems) and electronics (knowledge of VME, microTCA platforms and FPGA based systems)
• Good knowledge of industrial networking and fieldbus protocols like PROFINET or PROFIBUS
• Experience in Electrical and Electronics installations for optical and copper based cabling and connection of physical components and racks distribution
• Experience with design, production, testing, and troubleshooting of electronic assemblies
Educational Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in electronic technology or similar experience
• Good knowledge of national and European electrical standards
Optional Qualifications:
• Familiarity with the International Functional Safety Standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511
• Experience in working with mission critical or safety critical systems
• Understanding of operation of particle accelerators or spallation sources would be an advantage
• Experience deploying equipment in a radiation environment.
• Experience with computer aided design tools for mechanical design, schematic capture, and/or PCB layout commercial software tools.
• Experience in creating risk assessments and working within safe construction site environments

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
