Background of thesis project
Volvo Penta has experienced several issues with their belt drive systems, for example: Noise Issues, belt failures, belt dust in front of engine and in boat, belt tensioning system problems & idler pulley wear.
No manual tension systems acceptable for customers in the future. This within a range of Volvo Penta engines
Suitable background
You should possess these qualifications:
Master student in any of the following fields
Design and Product development
Mechanical Engineering
Equivalent
Knowledge in 3D cad program
Material science

Investigate possible design solutions enhancements/improvements on Volvo Penta´s marine engine´s belt drive systems.
The goal for Volvo Penta are to have a longer lifetime expectancy of the belt drive system. Improvement of emitted sound is a must.
Belt dust shall be eliminated or vastly improved.
The goal of the thesis is to develop technical & feasible solutions for improving the belt drive system. A belt drive design guideline shall be written, and the findings shall be tested in the physical application.
The best solution´s out of technical, economical and environmental perspective shall be presented.
