Job description
Direct cigarette smoke exposure to 3D epithelial cell cultures by VC10-S robot.
Thesis project: 30 credits
Cigarette smoke is the main driver of COPD, the third most common cause of death worldwide. The disease is characterized by destruction of the airways and inflammation. In this project we aim to establish a method for direct exposure of 3D cultures of airway epithelial cells to cigarette smoke by an advanced robotic system.
At AstraZeneca, we turn ideas into life changing medicines and strive to continuously meet the unmet needs of patients worldwide. Working here means being entrepreneurial, thinking big and working together to make the impossible a reality. If you are swift to action, confident to lead, willing to collaborate, and curious about what science can do, then you’re our kind of person.
Responsibilities
In this placement, the student will be part of a cross-functional team within Research and Early Development, Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmune (RIA) department building scientific knowledge around disease-causing mechanisms and identification of novel targets for treatment. Specifically, the student will be working closely with a team with high expertise in epithelial cell cultures.
Objectives and goals
Establish protocol for exposure of epithelial cells to direct cigarette smoke.
Get insight in project work.
Contribute scientifically to the Bioscience and Target Science teams.
Acquire experience in machine systems operation as well as molecular and cell biology methods including MSD, ELISA and confocal microscopy.
Qualifications
Essential Requirements
Good networking skills and interpersonal skills.
Interest and curiosity in technical equipment.
Ability to work independently.
Understanding of cell biology and molecular biology.
Written and oral communication skills in English.
