Background of thesis project


Currently Volvo Penta is using battery technology from automotive sector. The batteries developed for automotive sector have housing designs that are intended for on-road scenarios (durability to withstand crash, direct exposure to environment and on-road substances etc.)


Marine has different applications and housing design and materials. It is for example less relevant to consider crash, but weigh, vibration, and thermal event containment become more important etc.

Mechanical Engineering
Materials Engineering
Simulation and CAD skills

Description of thesis work


Aim


Research and define optimal housing (encapsulation) materials and design for battery packs for use in marine environment at Volvo Penta.


First step
Identify and gather application requirements
Refine requirements for housing
Identify potential materials

Second step
Develop housing concept
Perform virtual validation
Build prototype
Test prototype
