Thesis work: Supply of high-quality protein complexes to drive early drug discovery
Thesis type: 30 credits
Project start: January 2024
Student location: On Site, Gothenburg Sweden
Are you a student with interest and experience in protein sciences? Would you like to contribute to reagent strategies to enable early drug discovery projects? Do you want to be part of a collaborative team and push the boundaries of science? Then you should consider this master thesis project in Discovery Biology at AstraZeneca!
You will be part of Discovery Biology department within the Discovery Sciences organization and will be placed at our vibrant R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden. The department works with early drug discovery projects in a company that turns ideas into life changing medicines for patients worldwide. The Protein Science team is responsible for protein reagent supply, a fundamental but often rate-limiting step in early project phases. Our work enables multiple key deliveries on the way to new drugs, such as structural and biophysical studies, biochemical assay development and High-Throughput-Screening.
An early but often rate-limiting step for early drug discovery projects is supply of high-quality proteins in sufficient quantities. Your work will contribute to our constant strive to work with challenging protein targets enabling unprecedented reagent supply. Aim of this project is a better understanding of how to establish supply of protein complexes that are of interest to drug discovery.
At AstraZeneca, all of our employees make a difference to patients’ lives every day. We operate in more than 100 countries around the world and are one of Sweden’s most important export companies.
With more than 2,400 employees from 50 countries, the vibrant Gothenburg site helps to support the entire life-cycle of AstraZeneca medicines, from drug discovery and clinical trials, to global commercialisation and product maintenance. Gothenburg is one of AstraZeneca’s three strategic, global R&D centres, alongside Cambridge and Gaithersburg, and plays a central role in our mission to deliver life-changing medicines to patients.
Randstad Life Sciences is collaborating with AstraZeneca in this recruitment process. Please send your application in English and we only accept applications through Randstad’s website.
Deadline for application: 2023-11-01, selection and interviews will be ongoing. The position may be filled before the last day of application, therefore, apply as soon as possible.
All chosen candidates need to pass a background check and an alcohol and drug test before starting the project.
Responsibilities
Your responsibilities and tasks will be:
Expression, purification and characterization of recombinant proteins and protein complexes
Formation and characterization of protein-protein complexes
Independently plan and conduct experiments under the supervision by an experienced scientist
Interpretation and documentation of experiments and results.
Qualifications
Essential:
Hands-on experience and general understanding of methods and technologies applied to expression, purification and characterization of recombinant proteins.
Written and oral communication skills in English
Ability to interact and communicate in a multicultural setting
Desirable:
Experience of construct design for protein production
Previous experience of protein-protein-interaction studies
Previous knowledge of structural biology
Understanding of cellular signalling pathways relevant for drug discovery
