Thesis work - Thermal measurements of electrical insulation systems

Thesis work - Thermal measurements of electrical insulation systems

Arbetsbeskrivning

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

Background
Scania is going through a transformation to become the provider of complete and sustainable transport solutions. Electrified vehicles is one large part of that transformation. In order to obtain electric machines with high efficiency, high power density and high reliability, materials with improved thermal conductivity is of importance.

The properties of the materials in the electrical insulation system can be evaluated by using motorettes, which are small segments of the stator ring. By using motorettes instead of full size stators, many more material combinations can easily be measured.

Target
The target with the thesis project is to find material combinations for the electrical insulation system that provide an optimized heat transfer from the copper conductors to the stator stack, while maintaining the required electrical properties. Motorettes will be assembled with different material combinations, followed by thermal measurements before and after aging. The obtained data will then be used in a thermal simulation to evaluate the impact each material has on the heat transport.

In parallel, electrical properties of the same materials will be evaluated within another thesis project at the same group - Materials Technology for Electrification and Electronics at Scania R&D in Södertälje, Sweden.

Description of the assignment

• Assemble motorettes
• Perform thermal measurements of the different insulation systems, before and after thermal aging of the materials
• Set up a thermal model of the motorette in a simulation software and use experimental data as input for the model
• Present the results in a written report and in an oral presentation
