Profiling the translatome to unleash new therapeutics
If you’re inspired by the possibilities of science to make a difference and ready to discover what you can do – join us!
Thesis type: 30 credits
Project start: January 2023
Student location: On Site, Gothenburg Sweden
Do you have a passion for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and gene expression control? Would you like to apply your expertise to innovate sequencing technologies in a company that follows the science and turns ideas into life changing medicines? Then AstraZeneca might be of interest to you!
Translation is one of the most energy demanding cellular process, which plays a key role in determining gene expression. In fact, while transcription regulates which mRNAs are expressed, ultimately translation determines which proteins are produced. As such, translation is tightly regulated to avoid wasting cellular energy and precisely synthetize only the proteins needed in a spatial and temporal manner. Notably, dysregulation of the translation machinery drives aberrant production of proteins and is a leading cause in many human diseases and cancers. All of this makes it extremely important to advance technologies that would allow us monitoring translation at a mRNA-specific level.
At AstraZeneca, all of our employees make a difference to patients’ lives every day. We operate in more than 100 countries around the world and are one of Sweden’s most important export companies.
With more than 2,400 employees from 50 countries, the vibrant Gothenburg site helps to support the entire life-cycle of AstraZeneca medicines, from drug discovery and clinical trials, to global commercialisation and product maintenance. Gothenburg is one of AstraZeneca’s three strategic, global R&D centres, alongside Cambridge and Gaithersburg, and plays a central role in our mission to deliver life-changing medicines to patients.
Responsibilities
To help us in this challenge, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Master student to join our NGS/Transcriptomics team at AstraZeneca, Göteborg. As part of your Master thesis, you will develop and optimize technologies to visualize translation and the position of individual ribosomes on mRNAs transcriptome-wide. You will then apply this knowledge to identify novel disease-causing genes and evaluate the effect of innovative therapeutics at the translational level. Finally, you will be part of a diverse team, working on transformative NGS platforms with the ultimate goal of delivering new medicines and changing people’s lives.
