Three Senior Lecturers in Mathematics

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Division of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers invites applications for up to three Senior Lecturer positions.

Applications from all mathematical research areas will be considered. Precedence be given to those who are pursuing a vigorous research program including significant contributions beyond the doctoral dissertation and/or have an exceptional and well-documented record of successful teaching.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 170 faculty and staff and is the largest department of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries.
We teach a broad spectrum of courses across programs at the two universities. Internationally high-level research is pursued in both pure and applied mathematics, as well as mathematical statistics. The department consists of two divisions, Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. More information about us is available on the website http://www.chalmers.se/math/.

At the Division of Mathematics at the department there are many committed teachers with extensive and broad experience of all aspects of undergraduate education. We are appreciated by students and are continuously seeking opportunities for improvement, for instance by exploiting new technology in connection with teaching. Our goal is to be a leader in mathematics teaching at the top international levels.

The researchers at the division are internationally successful in areas such as algebraic geometry, number theory, algebra and representation theory, harmonic analysis and partial differential equations, computational mathematics and optimization, probability and discrete mathematics, complex analysis, functional analysis, kinetic theory, mathematical physics and biomathematics.

More information about our research groups is available on the website http://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/math/research/research-groups/.

Major responsibilities
You will be course responsible, which involves planning and performing teaching at all levels. You are also in particular expected to take part in the work of developing new teaching methodologies, for example through the application of new technologies. The position includes supervision of students' independent work, in particular acting as an assistant or main supervisor for Ph.D. students, depending on your current competence. There will also be a certain amount of departmental committee work.

You are expected to conduct independent research and engage in activities for attracting external funding for this.

Qualifications
You should have a PhD degree in mathematics as well as experience in teaching and coordinating mathematics courses at the undergraduate level. The latter should be well-documented and supported by personal references.

It is important that you can create a good atmosphere in teaching situations, and take individual responsibility for an assigned task. You should be comfortable with handling course administration involving course web pages and excel documents.

You should display initiative in seeking challenges and opportunities for development in your work, dare to question established practices but also adhere to decisions and priorities. Many of your duties will be carried out in conjunction with others, so you must be willing to listen and cooperate.

Our teaching languages are English and Swedish. Fluency in English is expected.  As most of our teaching is in Swedish, you should be able to teach in Swedish after a maximum of two years of employment. Chalmers offers courses in Swedish.

Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20140019 and written in English. For more information about the position and how to apply, please visit: http://www.chalmers.se/en/about-chalmers/vacancies/?rmpage=job&rmjob=1893
