Information about the department, the division and the projects
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees, and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas. We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. The department provides a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. There are many committed teachers with extensive and broad experience of all aspects of higher education.

More information about us can be found on our website: http://www.chalmers.se/math/

At the division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics we conduct research within the theory and implementation of finite element methods, inverse wave propagation problems, stochastic partial differential equations, geometric numerical integration, optimization, biostatistics, spatial modeling, Bayesian inference, high-dimensional data, large-scale computational methods, and bioinformatics. The division is also expanding in the area of AI – Artificial Intelligence.

We will recruit two doctoral students in mathematics to work under the supervision of:
• Annika Lang, with a project on efficient approximation methods for random fields on manifolds funded by the Swedish Research Council, and
• Klas Modin, with a project on geometric hydrodynamics funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Both projects include components of differential geometry, partial differential equations (PDE), and computational mathematics. The former also includes stochastic analysis, whereas the latter also includes Hamiltonian dynamics and statistical mechanics. Experience in any of these fields is meritorious.

For more details on the first project, see http://www.math.chalmers.se/~langa/
For more details on the second project, see https://klasmodin.wordpress.com/2021/01/22/phdposition/

Major responsibilities
You will be enrolled in a graduate program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position may include 20% departmental work, mostly in form of teaching duties.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Position summary
The employment is a fixed-term position during four years full time. The employment may include departmental duties up to 20% of full-time distributed during the study period. In the case of departmental duties, the employment will be extended by the corresponding time.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background in mathematics. You must have obtained a master's degree in mathematics or applied mathematics, or expect to complete such a degree by September 1, 2021.

Experience in some of the following areas may be meritorious: numerical analysis, differential geometry, computational methods for (stochastic) (partial) differential equations, random fields, probability theory, stochastic analysis, Hamiltonian dynamics, statistical mechanics.

Good communication skills in oral and written English are required. Excellent presentation skills, and fluency in English are required.

You should include all relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co-authored.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.
