Description
Two Ph.D. positions are available within the Distributed Systems and Communications (DISCO) Group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Karlstad University. Solutions for improving latency, both in wired and wireless networks, constitute a key research area within DISCO. The candidates are expected to work within the nationally funded project READY (Research Environment for Advancing Low Latency Internet).
Eligibility
Eligible for these positions are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, from which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör Degrees in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Eligible are also those candidates who have achieved corresponding degrees or knowledge in Sweden or abroad. Good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of congestion control, queue management, systems aspects of wireless networks, wireless MAC layers, software defined networking, and interactive applications is an advantage. Experience with tools for testing and evaluation of communication protocols is a benefit. Good programming skills are highly valuable.
The candidates should be able to work independently, as well as in a team; and be enthusiastic about pushing the state-of-the-art.
Terms
The positions are limited to 4 years each, but can be prolonged for up to one more year, if the PhD student also takes over other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides her/his PhD research. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position. The earliest date for filling the position is the January 1, 2014.
