Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Forest Ecology and Management in Umeå Two Ph.D. positions in Plant and Soil Ecology SLU (the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) develops our understanding of and sustainable use of biological natural resources. This is achieved through research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment and information extension. The Department of Forest Ecology and Management at SLU in Umeå is new and formed through the amalgamation of the previous three departments of Silviculture, Forest Ecology, and Forest Vegetation Ecology. This department currently has 10 professors and 23 lecturers, assistant professors and postdoctoral researchers; it is expanding and 4 professors are under recruitment. Umeå has more than 100,000 inhabitants and is a major centre in the otherwise sparsely populated northern Sweden. It is surrounded by vast areas of boreal forest, and is located 15 km from the Baltic Sea and 300 km from the Scandes Mountains. Two new Ph.D. studentship positions are available at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management. Both are fully financed (including salary and benefits) for a period of four years. The start date for both positions is September 1 2007, although there is some flexibility around this. These positions are: 1. Ref. nr 199/07. Nitrogen and phosphorus limitation of plant communities across elevational transects in subarctic tundra.. 2. Ref. nr 200/07.
