Reference number 313-165-10 Are you interested in the interplay between mathematical modeling of physical processes, numerical analysis, and computer programming?Are you eager to solve hard problems coming from applications in Science and Technology?The Department of Computing Science invites applicants for two PhD positions (doktorandtjänster) in Scientific Computing.The directions of research for the current positions are Optimal Control and Design and Inverse Problem for Electromagnetics, respectively.Both projects rely on numerical solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations coupled with numerical optimization algorithms.The research will be carried out jointly within an existing research group at the department and UMIT Research Lab, a newly launched interdisciplinary organization at Umeå University devoted to Computational Science, Visual Simulation, Optimization, and its industrial applications.The positions extend over a period of four years, provided that expected study and research results are achieved.The positions may also include part-time work (max 20%) as teaching assistant.If so, the total time for the position is extended accordingly (up to maximum five years).The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen Chapters 5 and 7).Prerequisites include either i) 240 ECTS-credits (swe.högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe.poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS-credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007.Students soon to complete their education may also be considered.A solid background is desirable in at least two of the fields Numerical Analysis, Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science.Good communication skills in written and spoken English are also required.The application can be submitted either electronically or in paper form and should contain: 1.A cover letter including short description of your research interests, 2.A curriculum vitae, 3.Copies of degree certificates, 4.Reprints / copies of Bachelors / Masters thesis, and other relevant publications, if any 5.Contact information for three reference persons.
