Information about the research/the project/the division
Chalmers has a long tradition of international research in wireless communications in close collaboration with top international academia as well as both local and international telecommunications and automotive industry. A large part of such research is performed at the Department of Electrical Engineering (E2), where these two PhD positions are announced. E2 is engaged in both fundamental and applied research, spanning a large variety of research areas including Communication Systems and Information Theory, Signal Processing and Antennas, Automatic Control, Automation, Mechatronics, and Biomedical Engineering. Cross-disciplinary research is central and encouraged through projects across different groups within the Department.
The Communication Systems Group employs around 35 people, including 8 faculty and 25 PhD students, and is active in a wide range of topics in digital communication. These include 5G, Beyond 5G and 6G wireless systems, hardware-constrained communication, positioning, vehicular communications, fiber-optical communication, and modern coding and modulation. In this research environment, two PhD students will be recruited to perform world-class research on Low-complexity channel estimation & adaptive duplexing with massive MIMO in mm-wave bands ("ESR02") and Application-aware design of forward-compatible non-orthogonal multiple-access transmission techniques ("ESR04"), respectively, for Beyond 5G/6G wireless systems.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies, where around 75% is research and approximately 25% graduate courses. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research (verbally and in writing) in major journals and conferences. You will also attend research projects meetings, where you will present your own work and establish useful contacts with other researchers. In addition, the position also includes teaching on undergraduate and MSc level, or other departmental duties, of up to maximum 20 percent of full time. You will participate in interdisciplinary research on Beyond 5G/6G wireless systems. In particular, these two PhD student positions ("ESR02" and "ESR04") are part of the European training network MSCA-ITN-ETN "SEMANTIC" (end-to-end Slicing and data-driven automation of Next generation cellular networks with mobile edge Clouds):
• ESR02: Low-complexity channel estimation & adaptive duplexing with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in the mm-wave band.
Objectives: i) Propose low-complexity channel estimation techniques for mm-wave bands using massive MIMO, ii) Study and propose novel techniques for the dynamic partitioning of uplink and downlink resources through adaptive duplexing in mm-wave bands, iii) Use Simulink to evaluate the performance of solutions.
• ESR04: Application-aware design of forward-compatible non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission techniques.
Objectives: i) Study orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)/NOMA waveform coexistence and mixed numerology design beyond 5G/6G, ii) design innovative NOMA waveforms for multi-GHz and sub-THz communications that adapt to upper-layer traffic patterns and inherently support various link types, including integrated access and backhaul (IAB), iii) Assess performance in testbeds.

Position summary
The position as a PhD student at Chalmers University of Technology is a full-time temporary employment, with a competitive monthly salary and full social benefits. There are no tuition fees for PhD studies at Chalmers. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
Qualifications
By the starting date, you should have a Master of Science degree in a relevant field such as Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Communications or similar.
Mandatory qualifications: digital communications, stochastic processes, signal processing, excellent English communication skills (spoken and written), programming. Advantageous qualifications: wireless communication, information theory, machine learning, artificial intelligence and skills in simulation techniques. You should have high grades in the core courses and a strong interest to pursue research in wireless communications. Knowledge of mobile communications systems, multiple antenna, duplexing, waveforms, resource allocation, access, fronthaul, and backhaul techniques are meritorious.
You must be creative and have the interest to work in industrial and international collaboration environments and the ability to present your ideas and research results to researchers and engineers with different backgrounds. Previous experiences in research, publications, and teaching are also advantageous. If Swedish is not your native language, you are encouraged to learn it during your employment. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
