The positions are a joint initiative between the Department of Systems and Space Engineering, division of Computer Science, at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and the municipality of Skellefteå. You will work within an active team conducting research in software systems, distributed systems, network technologies, advanced data analysis, and knowledgeable domain experts at the municipality of Skellefteå.

Project description
The projects are run as a collaboration between LTU and the municipality of Skellefteå, where the scientific work targets information and communication (ICT/IoT) architectures for data collection, data processing, and data analysis to extract information from complex contexts through statistical models, machine learning (ML) methods, and artificial intelligence (AI). This includes working with performance, scalability, resilience regarding platform architectures, and algorithm performance for AI/ML. The thematic areas addressed are the future's new eMobility solutions, connected/smart properties, and eHealth, which includes activity recognition, anomaly identification/detection, and prediction/forecasting.
Duties
You will take Ph.D. courses while performing thesis work in the form of, for example, literature, articles, design studies, construction and programming tasks, theory development, analyses, and presentations. The research area is multidisciplinary and of both scientific and applied nature. Scientific work is presented in English in articles in scientific journals and at international conferences.
Qualifications
To be admitted to doctoral studies, you must have basic eligibility and have completed a degree in engineering/master's degree in computer engineering/computer science or equivalent, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits at the advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.
You should have good knowledge of software development and computer science, as well as good skills in oral and written communication in English. Additional knowledge in mathematics, ICT/IoT architectures, and the Swedish language is a merit. It is also meriting if you have previous research experience and publications.
After the eligibility requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal characteristics and personal suitability.
To succeed with your doctoral studies at LTU, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. We are looking for a talented, analytical, and motivated colleague who can perform advanced research in our research group alone and in collaboration.

The candidate must have acquired knowledge of the Swedish language in speech and writing before the postgraduate program is completed in order to be ready to continue their career within Skellefteå Municipality.
Further information
The doctoral appointment is time-limited to four years of full-time studies. As a doctoral student, you may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform departmental service within, e.g., training and administration, which extends the employment for a corresponding period. Location: Skellefteå.
