Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Forest Ecology and Management, Umeå Two Postdoctoral Positions in Biogeochemistry and Trace Gas Fluxes in Boreal Peatlands The Department of Forest Ecology and Management is a new dynamic department within the Faculty of Forest Sciences at SLU, Umeå, Sweden, located in the boreal forest( 15 km from the Baltic Sea), but with activities also in other biomes including tropical ecosystems. The department has about 70 staff members out of which 13 are professors. We regularly publish in highly ranked journals like Nature and Science; have excellent international contacts and technical facilities.SLU in Umeå shares campus with Umeå University. We are seeking two highly motivated Postdoctoral Researchers with focus on: 1.Exchange of carbon (CO2, CH4 and DOC), energy and water between the mire and the atmosphere and hydrosphere (Ref.no: 3037/08).This position requires skills and experience from micrometeorology and Eddy-Covariance measurements. The core activity of this position will be to interpret, analyze, synthesize, and write up papers from existing data resulting from eddy covariance (carbon, water and energy exchange, etc.), chamber (CH4 & CO2), water runoff measurements (CO2, CH4 and DOC) e.t.c.Experience from manipulation and evaluation of large data sets are therefore essential, also knowledge of programming languages for data manipulation and statistical analyses is a merit. You will however also to some extent be involved in maintenance and measurements at the field site.2. Carbon biogeochemistry in boreal mires (Ref.no: 3038/08).The main focus of this position will be determined very much by the experience and interest of the successful candidate.Examples of possible field of interest include ecosystem modeling, studies on organic matter decomposition, control on land atmosphere exchange of CO2 and CH4, isotope studies, importance of plant species both for carbon fixation and for decomposition etc. The research within the two scholarships will be based on available data and/or research infra structure at the boreal mire Degerö Stormyr. The mire has been intensively used for research on mire biogeochemistry since 1995, with focus on carbon biogeochemistry.Since 2001 we have continuous Eddy-Covariance data on the land-atmosphere exchange of CO2, water and energy.Since 2004 also methane emission and runoff C-export are monitored continuously to allow estimates of the full ecosystem carbon budget.A number of field manipulation experiments are also available at the site.Requirements: PhD awarded within the last 5 years in ecosystem ecology, environmental science, or related field such as atmospheric sciences, biogeochemistry or microbial ecology.Experience in one or more of the following areas: eddy covariance, ecosystem modeling, micrometeorology, biogeochemistry of trace gases, plant physiological ecology, and/or nutrient cycling.Effectively and efficiently write peer-reviewed papers, and communicate fluently in English are essential for the positions. The positions are two years scholarships available for persons with no previous employment at the SLU.For a comlete advt: personal.slu.se/job
