Department of Biosystems and Technology
The Department of Biosystems and Technology is recruiting two senior lecturers within the subject area Animal Environment and Building Function. The two senior lecturers are expected to contribute to the development of existing and new interdisciplinary collaborations within the Department and the University as well as with other relevant partners within and outside academia.

Subject area
The subject area for the two positions is Agricultural Science with specialisation in animal production systems, interactions between the animals and their environment, and technical farm building solutions. The aim of the two positions is to develop the knowledge on e.g. sustainable and innovative stable design/housing and/or systems design, climate change impacts on production, sport and companion animals, strategies in animal production to adapt to and mitigate climate change, automatic surveillance and/or interactions between animals and the landscape. Research experience with connection to the Sustainable Development Goals and Animal Welfare is of relevance for the development of the subject. Various forms of farm-technology are applied and modified when studying animal-environment interactions. Thus, interest in systems and methods for surveillance of production, performance, animal health and behaviour is considered important.

Duties
Duties for the two senior lecturers are to:


• Contribute to developing and strengthening research within the subject
• Contribute to developing and strengthening education within the subject, from undergraduate to doctoral level
• Conduct research, publish scientific articles, apply for research funding in competition, and supervise doctoral students
• Conduct teaching, including administration, supervision and examination, at undergraduate and Master’s level
• Participate in and enhance research collaborations within and outside the University and in international networks
• Participate in and enhance educational collaborations within the department and SLU, as well as with similar subject specialisations at other higher education institutions, nationally and in international networks
• Develop and lead a research group
• Advance and strengthen cooperation and collaboration with society
• Communicate research findings within and outside the academic sphere, as well as to society

One of the two employees will be responsible for leading the subject area, including responsibility for the staff and economy within the area.

The department has a parallel language work environment. The lecturer will be able to carry out most of the tasks in English. As the university is Swedish-speaking, however, the holder is expected to be able to work and teach in Swedish within four years of taking up the position. The institution will support the holder to achieve this.

Qualifications
The candidate must:


• Have a PhD in technology, building constructions, animal science, agroecology, agronomy, biology, veterinary medicine or another relevant subject for the call
• Have shown pedagogic skills in teaching and supervision at the undergraduate, master and PhD level within a subject relevant for the call
• Have at least ten weeks full time university pedagogic education or have gained equivalent knowledge in other ways
• Have a strong publication record within a subject of relevance for the call
• Have been awarded competitive, external research funding within a subject of relevance for the call
• Have experience from applied research within a subject relevant for the call
• Have documented experience from contacts with stakeholders within the sector and/or other societal organisations
• Be skilled in English and preferably also in Swedish or other Scandinavian language
• Have documented experience in leadership including responsibility for staff and finances should be clearly presented for an applicant interested in the subject area leadership

Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria for appointment of a Senior Lecturer will primarily be based on the degree to which the applicant possesses the required qualifications specified for the position.

The assessment of research excellence will consider:


• Ability to publish peer-reviewed scientific publications in relevant and established journals within a subject relevant for the call
• Ability to initiate and pursue outstanding research within a subject relevant for the call
• Ability to continuously acquire external research funding and/or grants within a subject relevant for the call
• Ability to conduct applied or near-applied research in collaboration with stakeholders from the sector
• Skill in leading and developing a research group

The assessment of pedagogic excellence will consider:


• Ability to plan, implement and evaluate of teaching within a subject relevant for the call
• Experience in supervision of students and doctoral students
• Experience in examination of students
• Ability to integrate research and having a scientific approach in teaching
• Experience in pedagogic leadership

The assessment of other skills will consider:


• Experience of modern teaching methodologies, such as digital teaching methods and e-based learning
• Communicative and collaborative skills
• Contacts with stakeholders within the sector and/or other societal organisations with value for the subject area as well as for the education at the Department is meriting.

The assessment of the skills of the candidates, the pedagogic and scientific skills will be given equal consideration.

After the assessment criteria, the personal character and suitability will be considered.
