The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Vacuum Systems Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and with other divisions of the ESS.
The vacuum team in the Specialized Technical Services Group is responsible for all technical vacuum systems at ESS working alongside partner institutions and other groups in the Accelerator, Target and Instruments and Neutron Beams Divisions developing the design of these systems including the definition of interfaces with other groups. The team is also responsible for the specification and procurement of vacuum equipment and the installation and commissioning of these vacuum systems during the construction of ESS.
Main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for/or participate in;
• The liaison with partner institutions including the attendance at coordination meetings, witness of testing and other associate activities
• The preparation and development of vacuum system requirements specifications and other related documentation
• The design and integration of the ESS vacuum systems operating in the rough through to the ultra high vacuum (UHV) regimes
• The preparation, review and approval of technical documentation in support of the procurement of parts and equipment
• The preparation and development of integrated installation, test, and commissioning plans for both vacuum and other related systems
• The oversight of manufacturers during the fabrication of vacuum components and equipment; reviewing and approving manufacturing plans and other vendor documentation, monitoring quality and witnessing of acceptance tests at the vendors' premises
• The technical support and oversight during the assembly, installation, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of accelerator, target and instrument vacuum and other related systems
• Identification and implementation of R&D activities needed to support vacuum system operations and upgrades
• The development of budgets, schedules and plans in support of vacuum system operations and developments and implementing of these plans within budgetary and schedule constraints
• The oversight of vacuum technicians and technical associates in all matters related to vacuum system engineering and operations
• Compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements
Qualifications
A degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical field with a least 5 years experience in the design, construction and operation of vacuum systems and hardware, related control and data acquisition systems or an equivalent combination of both education and experience. Prior experience in the managing of technicians and subcontractors responsible for fabricating, installing, commissioning and operating vacuum systems is desirable.
The candidate must have excellent written and verbal communications skills in English, be computer literate and proficient using MS Office and MathCad etc. and able to perform vacuum systems analysis and have a working knowledge in heat transfer and stress analysis. Familiarization and a working knowledge of “Molflow” and other vacuum analysis programs would be advantageous.

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden
