Job description
We leave it to our Visual designer Rob (https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-wallis-b6b65411/) - your new co-worker, to give you an insight into his daily routine.
You could divide what I’m doing into two different areas. One is that I’m working on an evolving project. That’s a solution that has been implemented and our job is to see how the solution can be improved, updating functionality/flows and finer adjustments to the interaction designer. The other is to work with a new client which usually starts with a discover phase. Most of the time we work with an interaction designer and a business analysts; gathering the requirements from the client, doing research, developing the creative concept and then detailing the interaction design. Sometimes in smaller projects I can do this work alone with the support of a business analysts. During the detail phase, I design the key flows which usually includes the start page, product listing page, product detail page and some others. The work is then presented to the client for feedback, updates are made and the design is finalised to be handed over to the developer. Once it is implemented I will review the work. Sometimes I have to design icons sets or create comprehensive design systems, that detail the visual design and interactive behaviour. The system needs to work across desktop, tablet and mobile. You have to have that systematic approach to create something that is easy for the developers to work with and for the clients to use."
I don’t think I have ever worked with a client from scratch. They always have a brand design, an existing website or e-commerce solution that they want to migrate to a new platform. We really want to do a good research phase and talk to the clients and their customers together with the interaction designer. We work as a team where I focus mostly on how the visual design should work. It’s great to have different competences to bounce ideas around; between the interaction designers, the business analysts and the developers."
Sometimes, for projects with a small budget, we don’t do research in the first phase, the existing solution is migrated, then we have to go more with our gut, to design flows that are not covered by the new platform. But, when we have gained the client’s trust we can do the real research. I hope that we will get to a position where we always do research in the beginning, rather than getting them set up and then doing it during an evolve phase. I think we can get better and smarter there."
Why do you work at Columbus?
The good thing about working here as a Visual designer is that you get to work with a team, where all disciplines work together. You can see the project from the initial idea to the completion and follow up when it's out there live. 90% or more are e-commerce projects, but there is also the potential for brand design, I think that would be nice to add to what we do. We also get to work with different types of clients and businesses. That brings variety to the role, never same same. And also we have a really fun time."" (Check out our Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/columbussverige/) if you don't belive Rob 😄).
Do we sound like your next challenge?
Great! We are looking forward to your application, it only takes 4 seconds to apply and it's free from resumes. The process will be continuous and the role might be filled before the last application date.
