Wallenberg postdoc position: Reducing stray radiation

Wallenberg postdoc position: Reducing stray radiation

Arbetsbeskrivning

Our research group strives to build a quantum computer based on superconducting qubits. State of the art superconducting qubits are cooled to very low temperatures and should be in their ground state. However, all measurements show that they are excited to about 0.5% (often more). The detailed reasons for this are not understood. This subproject aims at solving the problem of overheated qubits. As a postdoc in this project you will work with very advanced technology and be part of a Swedish-Finnish collaboration, you will travel to Finland as a part of your work.

Information about the research and the division
The Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) is a 12-year, SEK 1 billion research program that started in 2018 and aims to take Swedish research and industry to the forefront of quantum technology. Our main project is to develop a high-end quantum computer based on superconducting qubits. WACQT is directed and coordinated from Chalmers University of Technology, however several Swedish universities are involved. The research areas quantum sensing and quantum communication are coordinated from Lund University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, respectively. WACQT also has several industrial partner companies, see Industrial collaboration.

The centre has also started the gender-balance initiative Women in WACQT (WWACQT) that aims at raising awareness on discrimination, and at supporting the career of women and gender non-conforming scientists in the WACQT community.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform microwave measurements at very low temperatures on superconducting circuits. You will do accurate population measurements of superconducting qubits, as well as design and test of cryogenic equipment that thermalizes the qubits better and avoids stray IR-radiation. This also includes testing cryo- and vacuum-compatible black materials that are black in the appropriate frequency ranges.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a PhD in physics or neighboring areas. Experience with cryogenics, superconducting circuits and microwave measurements is highly desirable. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement, but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
