Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction
Are you a skilled software developer with experience in web GUIs development? Do you wish to contribute to the ongoing upgrade of the ALICE experiment? This could be the opportunity for you! Take part!
Computing Technical Engineer with specialization in web GUIs development and operation in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), ALICE Detector & Systems Group (AID), Data Acquisition Section (DA).
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), one of the four large experiments of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, is a general-purpose heavy-ion detectors designed to address the physics of strongly interacting matter using nucleus-nucleus, proton-nucleus and proton-proton collisions. After the completion of the original scientific programme in 2018, ALICE is undergoing a major upgrade of its detector during the LHC long shutdown 2, to cover its future scientific programme planned for the next decade. A key element of this upgrade is the replacement of the online and offline computing systems by a combined online-offline system (O2) which combines the data acquisition, calibration, and reconstruction. The development of the O2 system is in progress and parts of the hardware computing platform is already installed. The O2 system, after a global commissioning with the upgraded detectors and other systems, will be used for physics data taking with the LHC beams starting in 2022.
The successful candidate will join the data acquisition section of the ALICE detector and systems group, which has different responsibilities in the O2 system:
-Procurement, installation and operation of the First Level Processors (FLP) farm at the experimental area;
-The design and the development of the FLP data flow, control and configuration software;
-The design and the development of the ALICE Data Quality Control and Experiment Control Systems;
-The maintenance and operation of the FLP farm and software packages.
Functions
As Web GUI developer, your responsibilities will include:
-Capturing user's needs, designing and implementing Web GUIs and other software part of the O2 FLP system;
-Deploying, configuring, maintaining, and operating O2 FLP software on different setups used by the detector teams for their tests or by the experiment for the data taking at the LHC Point 2;
-Producing User/Developers documentation and providing user support;
-Contributing to the integration of the O2 FLP software with other systems and ALICE detectors during the ALICE global commissioning;
-Participating in the experiment's operations, including occasional interventions outside standard working hours depending on the needs of the experiment.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of computing or a related field.
Experience:
-Demonstrated, successful experience within a team in the development of large software applications and in particular of Web GUIs.
-Demonstrated experience with modern software development environments, including version control, issue tracking, continuous integration and Web GUI testing.
-Demonstrated experience on the Linux operating system.
-Experience in gathering requirements and providing user support would be an advantage.
Technical competencies:
-Conceptualising, designing and developing user experiences and interfaces.
-Knowledge and application of software life-cycle tools and procedures: git, Mocha, Puppeteer, Continuous Integration.
-Knowledge of programming techniques and languages: javaScript, NodeJS, Express.
Behavioural competencies:
-Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind; delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
-Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements; actively participating in the implementation of new processes and technologies.
-Working in teams: cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals.
-Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented; checking to ensure that the message has been well understood.
Language skills:
-English: ability to understand and speak the language in professional contexts, draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and make oral presentations.
-French: basic knowledge would be an asset.
