Work Unit Leader for the Remote Handling Systems

The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Work Unit Leader for the Remote Handling Systems position.

The ESS Target Division is part of the ESS Machine Directorate with the responsibility to design, develop, procure, install, and commission the systems needed to convert the energetic proton beam coming from the ESS accelerator to neutron beams that are utilized for experiments. Key features of the target station are the target itself, the neutron moderator and reflector system, the neutron beam extraction system, the monolith structure surrounding the target, the ancillary services that remove heat from the target and nearby structures, and the active cells used to store and prepare for shipment the highly activated components removed from service.


Description of main responsibilities:
As a Work Unit Lead for the Remote Handling Systems, you will:
•    Be responsible for one or several work units in terms of requirements and deliverables as agreed with the Work Package Manager for the Remote Handling Systems
•    Provide expertise in remote handling techniques, standards and regulations
•    Assess and define the system and interface requirements for the remote handling systems
•    Develop and coordinate engineering solutions that satisfy specified requirements
•    Develop test specifications for system tests and commissioning
•    Serve as point of contact with in-kind partners, vendors, contractors and suppliers
•    Supervise fabrication and delivery
•    Coordinate and supervise installation of systems and equipment
•    Write processes and procedures for remote handling operations as well as system maintenance
•    Participate in design reviews for remote handling systems and interfacing systems
•    Participate in development of the nuclear safety case for the remote handling systems

Qualifications:
Technical competencies:
•    Bachelor in mechanical engineering (Master preferred) or an equivalent combination of education and experience in development and operation of remote handling systems and/or hot cell facilities
•    Extensive engineering experience, preferably in the field of remote handling systems within nuclear facilities
•    Knowledge of project management, including project planning, project execution and project reporting
•    Knowledge of radiation hazards and the nuclear field
•    Experience from medium to large size system installation efforts
•    Experience in operation and use of remote handling equipment is desirable
•    Experience of working in an international environment is essential
•    Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
